About the app

Wèn helps you learn Chinese characters by seeing them written, hearing them spoken, and practising the ones you choose rather than the ones an algorithm picks for you.

It covers the full HSK (3.0) 1 - 6 vocabulary. Every character can be watched drawn stroke by stroke at a speed you set, and every word has audio. You build your own decks from any characters you like, study them as flashcards, and print practice sheets when you want to write by hand.

There is no account, no sign-up, and no internet connection required. Everything the app knows stays on your device.

What it does

• Browse HSK (3.0) 1 to 6 Search by hanzi, pinyin or English meaning, and filter by level.
• Stroke order animations Every character drawn in order, at slow, normal or fast speed.
• Audio for every word Native pronunciation, with adjustable playback speed.
• Decks you build yourself Pick any characters, duplicate an existing deck, or merge several into one.
• Flashcard games Choose what each card reveals, and play by rounds, by lives or against a timer. Two people can share one phone.
• Printable practice sheets PDFs with stroke order phases, tracing guides and writing grids, in A4, A5 or Letter.
• Shareable decks Send a deck as a file by AirDrop, Messages or email. No account needed at either end.

Free and paid

HSK levels 1 and 2 are free and complete; every character, every animation, the audio, the games, and up to three decks of your own. It is not a trial and it does not expire.

A single one-time purchase, Full Deck, unlocks HSK 3 through 6, unlimited decks, deck sharing, two-player mode and printable practice sheets. There is no subscription.

What the app stores

Wèn saves the decks you create, the settings you choose and the display name you optionally enter. All of it is written to your device's local storage and never leaves it. Deleting the app deletes all of it permanently.

What leaves your device

Nothing, unless you deliberately send it. Two features can produce a file:

• Sharing a deck. The app writes a deck file and hands it to the iOS share sheet. Where it goes from there is entirely your choice, and the developer neither sees nor receives a copy.
• Practice sheets. PDFs are generated on your device. They are yours to print, save or send.

If you type a display name, it is written into decks you share so the recipient can see who made them. Leave it blank and nothing is written.

Purchases

The Full Deck purchase is processed entirely by Apple through the App Store. Apple's own privacy policy governs that transaction. The developer receives no payment details, no personal information and no identifier that could be linked to you; only aggregate sales figures from Apple.

Contact

If you email about a bug or a suggestion, that email is in the developer's inbox for as long as it is useful, and is used only to reply to you. It is never added to a mailing list or shared.

Children

Because Wèn collects no information at all, it collects none from children. The app contains no advertising, no third-party content and no way to communicate with strangers.

Changes to this policy

If this policy ever changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date. Any change that affected how data is handled would also require an app update, described in its release notes.
